Why Your Clay Mask Isn’t Working

Clay masks are meant to clarify…
Clay has been praised for its ability to lure out all those impurities lurking beneath your skin – breakouts, oil, dirt, dead skin – leaving it looking fresh, balanced and clear. This is because clay expands and pulls excess oil, sebum and bacteria out as it sits on the skin. For this reason, clay masks are particularly popular with those with oily or can-prone skin, as they can help to clear out clogged pores.
…but some can irritate or strip the skin
This is usually because the clays used in the formula are drying, effectively allowing the clay to come on in a zap all the healthy moisture out of your complexion. While absorbing excess oil can be beneficial for dealing with dryness in the skin, it’s also not ideal to have all the hydration pulled out.
Different types of clay can also impact skin types differently, with some more absorbent iterations being unsuitable for sensitive types, which often end up all sting-y and stressed.
